The employees of ARFAI are the firm’s greatest resource and asset. They share the vision of the firm and also assume the vision of the clientele. Positive morale and mutual respect provide an effective working environment conducive to creativity and prolific production.

Alvin Reinhard Fritz

Principal Architect

Alvin Fritz began reading architectural drawings at age 12 while working for his father Otto Fritz’s construction company.  As the son of a prolific masonry contractor, Fritz gained knowledge and skill in masonry and at the age of 17 began working as a foreman on numerous projects across Alberta. His experience in construction would serve to benefit his career in architecture.

Having excelled in fine art in his youth, Fritz began his post-secondary studies at the University of Lethbridge and pursued his creative development through painting, sketching, sculpture, ceramic arts and serigraphy. In 1978, Fritz received several awards and saw several of his works exhibited across Canada. Fritz received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Science degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1980.

Fritz chose to pursue his career in architecture at the University of British Columbia. He graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1983, receiving the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Gold Metal, awarded to the graduate with the highest academic standing. After winning the Deutsche Akademische Austausch Dienst (DAAD) scholarship to study Heritage preservation and restoration in Munich, he moved with his family to West Germany for one year to complete his studies at the Technische Universität München.

Upon his return to Canada, Fritz gained a broad range of experience in all aspects of the architectural profession. He was employed in numerous architectural offices, offering his strengths in design, building technology and graphic representation. In 1989, he founded his independent comprehensive practice Alvin Reinhard Fritz Architect Inc.

In the ensuing years the corporation grew to meet the demands for architectural design in numerous building types including schools, apartment buildings, churches, hotels, notable residences, institutional, commercial and senior’s accommodation. The firm also grew to meet needs across an increasing geographical region beginning in Alberta, and ultimately reaching from British Columbia to Ontario. Throughout these regions, ARFAi has strived to effectively meet the needs of its clients and to positively contribute to the architectural fabric of the communities which these projects serve.

Fritz is a sought after speaker. In 2015, Fritz was inducted into the University of Lethbridge Alumni Honour Society.

Intern Architect

Graham is a graduate of the Masters in Architecture program at the University of Calgary. Graham joined the firm in 2017 as an Intern Architect and applys his passion for design and architecture towards a wide range of unique and exciting projects within the firm.

Graham is a highly skilled architect who strives to utilize architecture to shape the world we live for the better. This involves designing spaces which not only function efficiently but are also designed using sustainable practices and place the health and wellness of the building’s users at the forefront. Graham places great importance on the client and is effective at reflecting the client highest desires in terms of building programming, aesthetics’ and in keeping with the budget. All resulting in amazing design that meet design needs for his clients.

Graham also has a strong belief in his responsibility as an architect to design buildings with the greatest respect and concern for the natural world. To that end he endeavours whenever possible to employ sustainable design elements into every project. Whether this means integrating renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic panels into a building’s façade or instilling the principles of biophilic design. Biophilic design is architectural design, which integrates in elements of the natural world, such as natural daylight, natural materials, color, or water throughout a building. Consequently, Graham seeks to create a pleasant synergy between the built form and the environment. Graham also provides a great deal of attention to a proposed designs site and context. To him, every site offers unique features, conditions and opportunities; all of which must be holistically considered to drive the design towards a unique and sustainable outcome.

Graham is also excited to employ new technologies into his architectural design. This can range from utilizing new software’s that better allow the client to understand the project, to researching new building materials, to utilizing new building methods or structural advances. All of which can offer unique advantages for the project. As the world changes, architecture and design must also change. Thus, Graham hopes to use his talents to create new and unique structures that cause one to re-think the bounds of what is possible. Ideally creating new architectural form, which is not only technologically advanced and beautiful aesthetically, but is also efficient, sustainable, and above all, a finely tuned to suite the buildings users.
